She started her acting career with Jinx Avery Mallory’s role in the television series The Edge of Night in 1981, and she portrayed Katherine Harrison’s role in the film A Little Sex in 1982. Capshaw appeared as Brunetta in the film Private Affairs in 1988, and she also starred as Laurie Prentiss Armstrong in the movie Just Cause in 1995.

Capshaw was born in Fort Worth, Texas, United States on November 3, 1953. She is the daughter of father Edwin Leon Nail, an airline employee, and mother Beverley Sue Simon, a beautician, and travel agent. She completed her schooling at Hazelwood Central High School and then she joined the University of Missouri. Kate also attended Southern Boone County High School and then she enrolled at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia. She got married to Robert Capshaw in January 1976, and they have a daughter Jessica Capshaw. They got divorced in 1980. Capshaw did her second marriage to film director Steven Spielberg on October 12, 1991. They have two sons Theo Spielberg, a musician, and Sawyer Avery Spielberg, an actor, and three daughters Mikaela George Spielberg, Sasha Spielberg, an actress, and Destry Allyn Spielberg, an actress.
